Hong Kong is one of the leading business hubs of the recent times. Apart from being a wonderful tourist destination, the place offer competent business opportunities for people from all over the globe. It is among the most preferred destinations for overseas and mainland companies as well as investors to enhance their business with brilliance.

The Government announced Quality Migrant Admission Scheme (QMAS). The new scheme is opened to all Mainland and overseas professionals to settle in Hong Kong.

Successful applicants will be allowed to bring along their dependent spouse and children under 18 to Hong Kong. Dependants are allowed to work or study.

The scheme will have 1,000 quotas for the first year and quotas for subsequent years will be advised by a committee appointed by the Chief Executive.

The major difference between the QMAS and the existing employment visa is that prior employment arrangement is not required for QMAS applicants. Once the applications have been approved, QMAS applicants can take up whatever employment or set up their own companies in Hong Kong.

With successful applications, Immigration will grant 1-year visas initially. The immigrants have to demonstrate that they have taken steps to settle in Hong Kong by securing gainful employment or establishing a business before Immigration will consider to further extend their visas.

If the QMAS immigrant cannot demonstrate the taking of any such steps, a one-year extension may be granted by Immigration at her discretion.

The assessment will comprise two phases. During phase one, applicants will be assessed based on a point test which incorporate factors such as age, academic/professional qualifications, working experience, language proficiency, family connections in Hong Kong, spouse’s achievement, number of dependent children, achievement in a particular field, etc. A minimum passing mark will be set.

However, the following requirements must be met:

1. Age between 18 – 50.

2. Financially sound without public assistance of H.K.

3. Good character with no criminal records.

4. Proficient in English.

5. A Bachelor Degree.

Having met the above requirements and the minimum passing mark, applicants will be ranked according to the scores they are awarded. High scoring applicants will be shortlisted to enter a selection pool (Phase Two) for further comparison. Quota will be granted to the most meritorious applicants.

The present pass mark: 80points

The Canadian Government has boldly made the decision to cap the number of visa applications for the Skilled Worker Visa at an annual figure of 20,000 in an attempt to further reduce the backlog of outstanding applications.

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney has further instructed that all skilled immigration applicants will need to submit a proof of proficiency in one of Canada’s official languages by a third party language testing facility such as the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the Test D’évaluation de Français (TEF).This language requirement will also apply to those applicants who wish to migrate to Canada through the Canadian Experience Class Visas.

Other changes that have been introduced include the number of occupations eligible for the Skilled Worker Visa Program. Due to an oversupply in the job market, some occupations have been replaced by other much needed professions. According to the Associated Press, these occupations are to include Social Workers; Psychologists; Dental Hygienists and Therapists; Pharmacists; Dentists; Architects; Biologists and related scientists; Insurance Adjusters and Claims Examiners, Primary Industry Production Managers (except those in agriculture) and professions in business services and management.

To further complement the changes, applicants must have at least one year of continuous full-time employment or equivalent paid work experience in one of the aforementioned occupations in order to qualify. These changes will also place a limit the number of applications made under each occupation which means that all applications will be processed on a first-come-first-served basis.

The changes (introduced on Friday June 25, 2010) are projected to hold until June 30, 2011. These changes hope to further increase the speed at which applications get processed by the Canadian

Government. If looking to migrate to Canada, it is recommended at this time to begin the application process as soon as possible in order to take advantage of these changes.

Singapore, with its clean and green environment, low crime rate, high standard of living, political stability and perpetual growth opportunities has lured many foreigners to seek Permanent Residence (PR) status in the city state. There are various schemes which a foreigner may successfully qualify for a PR status in Singapore.

The Landed Permanent Residence (LPR) scheme allows foreigners outside of Singapore with exceptional qualification and/or professional work experience to apply for Singapore permanent residence.

A successful applicant will be given an in-principal approval letter by Immigration and Checkpoints Authority of Singapore (ICA) to establish residency in Singapore. There is a one-year grace period from the date of approval for the applicant to relocate to Singapore and to find employment. Singapore permanent residence status will usually be granted once residency has been established in Singapore.

There are factors to consider when applying for LPR:

Tertiary academic qualifications, especially those of prestigious academic institutions

In a high-demand profession and substantial professional experience and/or outstanding merits

Currently not working in Singapore

Non-EU Immigration: Indian professionals to oppose UK cap
An influential group representing professionals from India and other non-European Union countries will challenge the temporary annual cap of 24,100 to be announced by Home secretary Theresa May on Monday. .

Non-EU Immigration: Indian professionals to oppose UK cap

An influential group representing professionals from India and other non-European Union countries will challenge the temporary annual cap of 24,100 to be announced by Home secretary Theresa May on Monday. .

Amit Kapadia, director of Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP) Forum that fought a successful legal challenge against immigration rules, said the government’s move to impose an “illogical” cap will be opposed.

“Any such cap will affect Indian professionals because most non-European Union migrants to the UK come from India. But we will oppose and lobby against any illogical number or cap that the government may seek to impose,” he told media.

A spokesman for London mayor Boris Johnson also expressed opposition to the annual cap.

“A crude cap could be very detrimental to the free movement of the talented, creative and enterprising people who have enabled London to be such a dominant global force,” he said.

Placing the cap at 24,100 between now and April 2011 means that any Indian and other non-EU professionals cannot apply get Tier-1 Visa even though they are eligible once the limit is reached.

This cap system will affect Indians dearly as Indians have been among the largest group of professionals recruited in the IT, medicine, education and services sector every year.

Kapadia said any knee-jerk attempt to impose a cap will hurt the British economy and will be opposed by British business and industry.

Sections of the Cameron government and sections of British trade and industry have opposed the annual cap plan on the ground that the British economy will ultimately suffer if employers are not allowed to hire the right kind of professionals from abroad if talent in certain sectors is not available within the country.

The agreement between coalition government partners Conservatives and Liberal Democrats says: “The Government believes that immigration has enriched our culture and strengthened our economy, but that it must be controlled so that people have confidence in the system.”

According to the pact, they recognised that to ensure cohesion and protect the public services, the need “was to introduce a cap on immigration and reduce the number of non-EU immigrants”.

“We will introduce an annual limit on the number of non-EU economic migrants admitted into the UK to live and work,” it said, adding “We will consider jointly the mechanism for implementing the limi

The Move Is One Of The Promises In Tory-Lib Dem Coalition Agreement

Despite voices of caution, British home secretary Theresa May is going ahead with controversial plans to place an annual cap on the number of Indian and other non-European Union professionals who can be hired for jobs in Britain. Indians are one of the largest groups of non-EU professionals to migrate to Britain every year, taking up jobs in the IT, medicine, finance and education sectors.

May is scheduled to place a temporary cap of 24,100 non-EU migrants who could be hired for jobs in Britain between now and April 2011, when the annual cap plan will be firmly in place.

May is expected to make the announcement of 24,100 cap on Monday while launching a consultation process to decide the level of a permanent cap to be enforced from next April. Placing the annual cap on non-EU workers is one of the promises in the Conservative-Liberal Democrats coalition agreement.

Under this new development only 3000aprox applicants per month are eligible for TIER-1 across the NON- EU nations. This is the right time for anyone who wish to make their dream come true to work & settle in UK.

Sections of the Cameron government and sections of British trade and industry have opposed the annual cap plan on the ground that the British economy will ultimately suffer if employers are not allowed to hire the right kind of professionals from abroad if talent in certain sectors is not available within the country.
Schools secretary Michael Gove and Universities Minister David Willetts have reportedly raised concerns about the annual cap at a cabinet committee meeting chaired by deputy PM Nick Clegg. The Liberal Democrats had strongly opposed the cap during the election but agreed to it in the coalition agreement.

There will be no restrictions on the number of migrants allowed to come in from an overseas company to a branch in Britain under the temporary cap.

In 2008, net migration to Britain was 163,000. This was down from 233,000 in 2007 but the Conservatives vowed in their manifesto to cut this to levels seen in the 1990s when it was “tens of thousands a year, not hundreds of thousands”. @AGENCIES

The new system is slated to be implemented within two weeks, said British deputy high commissioner for eastern India Sanjay Wadvani.

“We have simplified our visa process and most of the rejections are due to incomplete application forms which we receive. In the next week or two, the waiting period for a UK visa will come down to ten days,” said Mr Wadvani. He was addressing a meeting organised by the Calcutta Chamber of Commerce here on Friday.

In 2009, there were more than 4.25 lakh UK visa applications from India. Over a million visitors travel between India and UK every year. UK’s visa system was completely revamped 18 months back.

Mr Wadvani said the new government in UK, led by prime minister David Cameron, is keen to enhance partnership with India. UK has identified sectors like manufacturing, infrastructure, information and communication technology (ICT), telecom, life science, financial services, agri-business, retail and creative industries as priority sectors for expanding ties.

“The number of trade missions planned for India will increase a lot as the new government and ministers settle down,” Mr Wadvani said.

In the East, UK is focusing on areas like mining, cleaner coal technologies, renewable energy, water and waste management, ICT, infrastructure, healthcare and education.

“UK can be more adventurous in eastern India and take calculated risks as companies are open to export beyond the European Union and North America. But the government and businesses here needs to reach out to such companies to bring investment and business ties in the region. There is a shared responsibility in this regard,” Mr Wadvani said.
