Indian students perturbed with the reduction of OPT from 3 years to 1 year

The Indian students are not happy with the option of President’s Trump’s decision to reduce the duration of the OPT period from 3 years to 1 year. However, Ireland has become a preferable option for students because it has decided to extend the duration of post study work period for students from 1 year to 2 years. The students can stay back for a period of 2 years after completing their Master’s and doctoral degree from this country.  During the tenure of President Obama, the Indian students with STEM backgrounds could serve internships for a period of 3 years instead of 1 year after completing their studies.  Although the decision to rollback the extension of OPT by 2 years which happened during Obama’s tenure has not been announced yet, when announced, it will be a major blow to Indian students aspiring to study in this country.

Every country today is granting post study work period to international students. Germany provides a work period of 18 months to students to get a job after completing studies there. Even Australia provides students a work permit/job-seeker visa for 2 years if they have pursued graduation for a period of 2 years from this country.

Canada is also providing work options to students who have completed education there. The post study work permit is for a period of 3 years.  So, its yet to see whether the President Trump’s decision to reduce the duration of STEM background will affect the flow of international students here.
